ABOUT

My name is Louise. I was diagnosed with autism in my late forties.

This blog is my journey from late diagnosis, how I navigate the ups and downs of life, and the strategies I use to cope.

I also write about my lifestyle, my life experiences, and raising neurodiversity awareness.

Autism is a spectrum, and it can look different in each person. This is one way autism can present.

My Solution to Gut Problems

This is a short blog post, but maybe helpful for some of you. I have had gut problems all my life, and I often got an upset stomach eating foods I wasn’t familiar with. I will spare you the details, but I think it is what has caused anxiety about food.

I am not good at trying new foods. I like to eat what I know I have eaten before. This seems to have gotten worse as I have got older, as when I was younger, I was not as bad as I am today. It has spoiled my enjoyment of food and of going out to restaurants. There are also times when I have eaten a meal, and it has caused an upset stomach.

However, I have found a solution that works for me. I am not sure if this will be the case for everyone, but it is worth a try. I have a small cup of kefir milk a day. I also enjoy the kefir yoghurt. Since I have done this, I have had no negative episodes with my gut. It is not to say that I won’t have in the future, but it has definitely helped. I am enjoying a wider range of foods. I am still not experimental, but I am more relaxed about what I am eating.

  1. do you get used to the taste? my autistic daughter’s diet revolves around grilled cheese sandwiches, peanut butter, jam sandwiches, cheese pizza and a huge amount milk…my autistic son, meat and potatoes as long as he doesn’t have to eat the potatoes….neither will try anything new, no matter hw many times I explain to them they never know if you’d like something if you don’t try

    1. I did after a while. I used to have it with honey, but apparently honey can affect the good bacteria, so I don’t take it with honey now. The original is a little sour. However, there are kefir yoghurts that are flavoured and also the same with the milk, so it is a better taste. My daughter doesn’t like the milk so I give her the flavoured yoghurts.

    2. Hi, I have been learning that using a little honey is fine and it won’t disrupt the probiotic benefits. It is during fermentation that honey can disrupt it. I might go back to adding a little to the original milk. I sometimes have it with fruit too. There can be lots of ways to sweeten the original kefir :).
