ABOUT

My name is Louise. I was diagnosed with autism in my late forties.

This blog is my journey from late diagnosis, how I navigate the ups and downs of life, and the strategies I use to cope.

I also write about my lifestyle, my life experiences, and raising awareness about neurodiversity.

Autism is a spectrum, and it can look different in each person. This is one way autism can present.

Learning the Importance of Community

I have been thinking a lot about community lately. Especially now, with everything that is going on around us. For me, I have learned that strong communities are essential for survival and success. I understand that standing together is important, and that a lack of unity leads to a breakdown of trust, creates division (with the vulnerable suffering the most), halts progress, and breeds fear and isolation for everyone.

What is community?

We cannot survive without community. It is about sharing values and goals, and it comes down to living, working, and growing together. Communities can differ, but most share these basic values for success.

  • Trust is core to community, as if we do not trust each other, our relationships break down. We do not feel safe, supported, and confident. Relationships are based on trust. If we do not have it, we do not have a relationship. It is essential in both professional and family environments. We can rely on each other when we need to.
  • Respect benefits the strongest communities. Valuing different cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds, sharing a sense of unity while maintaining space and tolerance for differences. It encourages cooperation and teamwork and reduces conflict.
  • Responsibility plays a part in healthy communities because everyone has a role to play. If everyone plays their part, it benefits everyone in the community; if some do not, it can lead to crime, trust issues, safety concerns, and a lack of cooperation.
  • Cooperation is essential for working together toward common goals. We share our skills, strengths, and creativity for a rewarding community for everyone.
  • Inclusion is essential so that people feel seen, heard, and valued. Healthy communities are diverse, not based on benefiting one particular group.
  • Support and care in communities help people to support one another through challenges and celebrate success. If we support each other, communities will be stronger because we are there for each other in times of need and struggle.
  • Communication must be open, honest, and respectful, as it is essential to building understanding and preventing conflict.
  • A shared purpose unites people and brings them together. We work towards something meaningful, such as gatherings, charity, and fundraising.
  • Integrity, such as doing the right thing, builds long-term strength, creating positive relationships and inspiring others.
  • Belonging is the heart of community.

Final Thoughts

No one can live in isolation, and sometimes we all need help, so it is good to have people around us whom we can rely on. There are many factors that go into creating healthy communities. Everyone is not the same, but when people accept each other for who they are and understand what they can contribute, it is central to creating a strong community.
