When starting freelance or any type of writing, you have to spend time writing each day. It takes a lot of practise to get it to a good standard. This is not something that happens overnight, and good writing takes time to perfect. Writing to a writer is like sport to an athlete, as you need daily practise to improve and have passion and enjoyment to succeed.
If you don’t enjoy writing, it probably isn’t for you. Not only do you have to spend a lot of time practising your craft, but time alone is part of the package. I love spending time with my own thoughts, and I enjoy being alone, so it comes naturally to me.
Writing is not just about words
Writing is not just about putting words on paper, but it is about the way you think and observe the world. You have to choose words carefully to show empathy and communicate effectively with the right audience. Also, how others will view or understand your writing is important.
Editing Your Writing
Writing is also about refining what you have created. You produce your first draft, then polish it with subsequent drafts and editing. It takes time to perfect your piece.
What you have written has to make sense. Grammar, spelling, and sentence structure have to be checked and corrected, and the layout needs to be suitable for the type of writing you are creating. Starting your own blog can be challenging, especially because it’s hard to edit your own work.
Structure Your Writing
Understanding how to structure your writing is another factor. A blog post is more about explaining and sharing information, writing using keywords for SEO (search engine optimisation), which involves using the words people are searching for to improve visibility on Google. Blogging also persuades readers to take action. Your writing can also be, for example, formal or chatty.
This differs from creative writing, where you describe events, evoke emotion, entertain, and connect your reader to your story.
Yet, there are occasions when different types of writing overlap in ways such as structure.
Organising Your Words
Clarity is essential for readers to understand. Choose the right words to explain what you want to write and avoid repeating words and information. This includes organising your words into a logical order, such as strong introductions and conclusions, and keeping paragraphs for each individual idea.
Read, Then Read Again
Reading is essential for learning and improving your writing. Reading helps you learn different writing styles to develop your own voice, because you experience novel writing, articles, and essays. You learn structure and flow. You absorb vocabulary, so it expands. It encourages you to create new ideas and inspiration, including new ways of thinking. Reading is a step that you should not forget.

The Importance of Research
Research is important when writing in your niche as a freelance writer. It takes time, and the sources have to be accurate, backing up what you are saying. This stage is also essential to creative writing. For example, if you are writing a historical detective novel, understanding the policing of the time is important to make it realistic. However, if you are writing a creative writing niche such as science fiction or fantasy, you only need enough knowledge for your story to be believable.
Fall in Love with Your Writing Niche
Being interested in the topics you are writing about is essential, as there is nothing worse than writing about something you are not interested in. So, it is important to choose a subject you are passionate about or one you already have some knowledge of.
Final Thoughts
When writing, there is a lot to think about. However, when practising daily, it can get easier because you gain more knowledge and develop a system for writing more effectively.
I took a break from writing last year. I missed out on writing time, but it helped me gather new perspectives on the world, I processed my autism diagnosis and created new ideas. I was a little rusty when I went back to it, and it was difficult to get into the writing routine.
I am still working on my writing, and the more I do, the more I learn. I will keep improving. There is always room to continue to grow.
