This is a short post about how autism spectrum disorder and narcissism are very different conditions. They have overlapping traits that can be confused.
Narcissism
Presentations show a lack of empathy, entitlement, grandiosity, manipulation, arrogance, excessive admiration, exploitation, and a desire for control.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Presentations that vary between individuals include social and verbal communication difficulties. They also include challenges with social cues and difficulty with relationships. Additionally, repetitive behaviors are common. Sensory differences and emotional regulation are also affected.

My Experiences and the Difference
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, and narcissism is a personality disorder. These conditions can be confused because they both involve difficulties with relationships and empathy. However, the reason behind the behaviour is very different. I have autism, and I care deeply for others. I feel bad if I have hurt someone’s feelings or wronged them in some way, and I have no intention of gaining things for myself in my relationships. Spending time with the person is important to me, and I feel empathy toward an individual when I understand that they are upset or hurt. I admit my mistakes when I have done something wrong. When I tell the truth, it is because I believe in fairness, and I do not believe in dishonesty unless I am protecting someone’s feelings in some way. Honesty for me is an ethical obligation.
Final Thoughts
Autism spectrum disorder and narcissism are very different conditions. Autism involves neurodevelopmental differences, and narcissism is a desire for self-image and validation.
It is easy for us to label individuals without understanding what is beneath their behaviour. These conditions come from very different places, and we need to create space for understanding this difference.
