ABOUT

My name is Louise. I was diagnosed with autism in my late forties.

This blog is my journey from late diagnosis, how I navigate the ups and downs of life, and the strategies I use to cope.

I also write about my lifestyle, my life experiences, and raising awareness about neurodiversity.

Autism is a spectrum, and it can look different in each person. This is one way autism can present.

Losing Track of Time

Daily writing prompt
Which activities make you lose track of time?

One activity I hate the most is getting ready in the morning. This is where I often lose track of time. The entire process of getting ready and then leaving the house is exhausting to do every day. I always end up leaving the house late. I would love to take my time in the morning and have a leisurely breakfast, but this is not realistic. I have to go to work, and my daughter has to go to school.

Getting myself and my daughter ready in the morning is such a challenge. I get up first, and focus on getting myself washed and dressed. I then get my daughter up for school or her childminder depending if it is the school holidays. She is so reluctant to get out of bed. When she sits down to eat breakfast, she eats it so slowly that I have to keep prodding her because she gets easily distracted with what is going on around her. She wants to watch YouTube or play games on her iPad, and when I tell her to get dressed or clean her teeth; she does not do it. I turn my back to get myself organised, and when I come back to check, she has not started dressing, or she has missed putting on her socks, or she is running back and forth in the hallway; it is an endless battle.

When we have finally organised ourselves, dressed and have had breakfast, I have to go around the house and check I have turned everything off before I leave, feed the cat and empty the litter trays. The time in the morning seems to fly, and I don’t have enough of it.

The Solution

We are not good in the mornings, so to prevent us running late, I set two alarms, one for when we should get ready to leave, which is fifteen minutes before we leave the house. During this time we collect our jackets, bags and make sure we have everything we need. The next alarm is fifteen minutes later, when we actually leave the house. It works, but I think I am tired out before the day starts.
