ABOUT

My name is Louise. I was diagnosed with autism in my late forties.

This blog is my journey from late diagnosis, how I navigate the ups and downs of life, and the strategies I use to cope.

I also write about my lifestyle, my life experiences, and raising awareness about neurodiversity.

Autism is a spectrum, and it can look different in each person. This is one way autism can present.

Cat Love

When I decided I wanted a pet, I knew having one would be a great addition to the family for me and my daughter.

I got my cat, Vinny, in January 2025. Before I went to collect him, I learned everything about cats and bought what I needed, so the house was ready when he arrived. I covered all my cables in case he chewed any of them. I removed plants, so he didn’t ingest anything he shouldn’t and set up his litter trays so he could find where they were.

The journey to pick him up was stressful, but also filled with excitement at the thought of getting our furry friend. The weather had been terrible the day before, with high winds and snow. I didn’t think I would be able to pick him up. My stomach churned, and the frustration was like someone holding me back with a long rope, not allowing me to reach my destination. I just wanted to get him home. However, we pushed on and packed the car in the morning and drove south to the breeder’s house. When we arrived, the breeder was so welcoming and was waiting for us at the front door. I was so relieved we had finally arrived there and got the chance to meet our new companion.

Vinny is a ragdoll cat and is so beautiful, with a lovely temperament. He strolls up to you, purrs and meows gently. He also has the most beautiful blue eyes.

He loves to sleep in my TV chair or lies looking out the window watching the birds and insects. He is not much of a lap cat. When I lift him up and put him on my lap, he wants down, but he loves me to stroke him when he rolls over and shows me his belly.

I grew up with dogs. My mum loves dogs, and she always had one. However, my daughter and I hate the noise of dogs barking, so a cat is better for us.

Vinny does sometimes wake me early in the morning, at five or six, to get me to feed him. He loves his food and especially chicken. He has been very easy to feed. Cats aren’t always like that, as they can be fussy.

I look forward to the years of happiness we have ahead. He has grounded us so much.
